Lossy and lossless audio formats

Understand MP3, AAC, Opus, WAV and FLAC before choosing a browser audio conversion.

Lossless and uncompressed

PCM WAV is often uncompressed, while FLAC reduces size without discarding decoded audio samples. Converting an MP3 into FLAC does not restore high-frequency detail or other audio information already lost.

Lossy compression

MP3, AAC and Opus can achieve much smaller files by discarding some signal information using perceptual models. Each encode can cause additional loss, particularly when converting between low-bitrate formats repeatedly.

Sample rate and bit depth

Higher values do not automatically mean better sound when the source is limited. Downmixing stereo to mono, changing sample rate or applying loudness normalization can alter sound and levels; listen for clipping, abrupt boundaries and channel problems.

Use a short sample and listen

Match the destination device and use case. A ringtone may require a different container or codec than a podcast upload. Compare speech clarity, transients, channel balance and silence rather than judging by filename extension alone.
